New install
A quick question,
I need to install Win 2k on an(almost) new disk.
The drive was a secondary drive on my old sys- formatted to NTFS.
I now need to use it as a primary drive on another sys.
When I boot from CD(win 2k) I get a DISK BOOT FAILURE error.
When I use a boot disk I get a "cannot run this program from DOS" error.
I know I could install win 98 and update to 2k but I cannot be arsed..any quick fixes?

If you boot from your 98 floppy disk and run FDISK does it show a fixed disk is present?
If so, you should be able to delete the current partition (Which may appear as a NON-DOS partition) and create a new FAT32 partition.
Once you have done that, reboot from floppy and at A:\ prompt type
Format c:/s
Reboot again (From WIN2K CD) and try installing WIN2K again.
1 other thing, was the disk previously a slave drive? if so you will have to set it back to a master (usually a jumper setting on the drive if IDE)
Sorry if I'm teaching you to "suck eggs" here.
Cheers
Mark.

Booting from CD
All you should have to is set the first boot device to the CDROM drive in the BIOS. At work I do come across the odd pc that will not boot from CD. The main cause of this is either CDROM drive issues or a damaged CD. Some of the older CDROMs have issues when requiring to boot from them. First try another copy of Win2k then borrow a m8s CDROM drive and try that. You can setup partitions and Format the drive from the Win2k setup console once you have booted from the CD. Hope this is useful

Thanks all,
I already tried all the above & none worked.
Eventually gave up & replaced as a slave in the old machine, formatted to FAT 32 using Partition magic, replaced in new machine & set up Win 98. Finally upgraded to Win 2k.
Thanks for all your help though.
