Default Linux Firewalls?

Ok, another bank holiday weekend and another little project. I decided to use an old box as a Linux firewall, but being a Windows user through and through I have had no dealings with Linux before. Does anyone have any views on Smoothwall or IPcop? Or any other Linux based distributions that will make a secure Firewall/Router/VPN?

Used smoothwall for a couple of years on an onld POS p100 I had knocking about. Does exactly what it says on the tin. IPcop I downloaded and burnt the iso , just never got round to installing.

New router with built in firewall now , so it's redundant - hell if you are in the Kingston area you can have it free gratis ...

I have now set up IpCop on an old machine. Seems to be working fine, no real use for it but I wanted to have a play.

IPChains is the previous generation of Linux firewalling. All the current distributions of IPCop / Smoothwall etc have moved onto IPTables which has several advantages.

Unless you're very comfortable in Linux you;re unlikely to be able to roll your own better than one of the dedicated firewall distributions.
