Default Converting .mp4 videos

My XDA saves videos as new .mp4 files, but none of my std players on the PC will fully accept them I've transfered them over as backup. I usually get the sound dropped.
There's lots of fancy software on the market that is over the top and of course I have to pay for.
Is there any freeware that can convert to a file type readily accepted by Meida Player, Real Player etc.

QuickTime should play them. They will probably be 3GPP format videos in an MPEG4 wrapper.

Otherwise, I haven't got a clue
