Wardriving/warwalking
Hi folks,
Has anyone here played with WiFi 'site-survey' (war-walking / war-driving) tools? I installed PocketWarrior on my iPaq yesterday, and within 5 minutes had recorded 11 access points. Only 4 of those had WEP enabled! Is that the sort of ratio you've found, or are my neighbours just naive or generous with their bandwidth?

I've found it to be more like 1 in 10 have wep enabled on housing estates around here. Same ratio have bothered to change the default password on the router. Just about to order some kit to perform a full study for work.

I use Netstumbler on my laptop - so far found three networks locally - all protected. I'll keep trying though....

From reading the comments on that page, there's not many cards that have sockets for externals antennae (don't know how true that is). The reference to a parabolic dish antenna sounds interesting. Better for locating APs, if that's your aim (rather than merely detecting them).

The range of most WiFi cards is going to be good enough to detect APs without too much problem. Buffalo's cards can accept external aerials if required.
