athlon 64 bit processor
I have one of these puppies installed on my games pc at home, when purchasing the pc the guy selling it said that when 64 bit operating systems come out, i will get even faster performance.
was he talking out of his **** or is this correct? if so, will that mean a simple patch for windows xp or buying new windows software?

He is correct. There is a version of Win 64 floating around, you will see a performance increase when they are around.

Me to No he wasnt talking b0ll0cks, amazing eh.
Atm your CPU is running only in 32bit mode. The AMD 64 chips switch to this mode automatically. When WinXP 64bit becomes readily available we WILL notice a big improvement in OS performance. Well hopefully anyway So yes u will need to invest or upgrade to WinXP 64bit.

Timescales vary but the last I read was end of this year. Expect that to change at least six times this month though
Is there an eval of XP 64bit but drivers are an issue for a lot of people.

i have one of these going into my new build next week, whilst understanding that it will be faster with Win 64, won't we need 64bit drivers for everything else for it truly to make a difference. Please don't jump all over me i do not pretend to be any kind of expert in these things!!!

The only reason why it will be faster is because the chip will be running in its native mode. In general 64-bit OS's are no faster than 32bit and can be slower. Their main advantage is a single program will be able to address more than 4g of memory but when did you last see IE that size
Been running 64bit CPUs and OS's for the last 8 years and waiting for the world to catch up

However you will still be able to run 32bit applications under XP64, its just that the CPU will switch into 32bit mode automatically. I dont know if this will work with 32bit drivers mind you. But yeh theres no point in having a 64bit OS until all the drivers and apps are 64bit as well.
