Unhappy Help, windows media player has stopped working

For the last couple of days, media player (9) has come up with the error message 0xC00D1198 - Cannot connect to server - every time I have tried to download a video file. I have followed the help instructions to autodetect my proxy settings, but this makes no difference. What do I do now?

English please, I am not a computer whizz, and do not follow/understand jargon.

i had the same problem on one of the PC. i suspect it was some sort of spyware that hijacked media player and then ad-aware deleted or something like that (coz i was using that PC to download "stuff"). wmplayer.exe was no more in c:\program files\windows media player !

i just went to microsoft website and install windows media player 9 again.

From your message "every time I have tried to download a video file"

Where are you trying to download the file from?

Good point suba, thinking about it, it's only been occuring since I installed ad-aware, so maybe I've done the same thing without knowing.

JC, Ah I understand In answer to your question, it's various files, usually video clips linked in from this bbs

There's a new virus out the destroys Windows Media Player and uses it to send itself in the usual fashion (everyone in your address book, spoofed from address, etc.). It appears as media hyperlink in an email, and when you click it, its the virus itself and not a media hyperlink (or summut like that).

If your wmplayer.exe has stopped working, there's a good chance you have it.
