ZoneAlarm problems? Blocking MY access...
Got a very temperamental broadband connection with XP Home.
Got the latest ZoneAlarm, the 15-day Pro trial which reverts to the basic firewall after the time period is up. Trial period has just run out.
Both during and after the trial period, it was really difficult to access web pages- frequently I'd get the error "page not found". I'd then switch off ZA, go to the page instantly, and switch it back on again. It would then work for a few more pages, and block access again. I'd hoped it was due to crap "trial period" software, but still getting the same problem even after the trial stuff has uninstalled itself. I can't get a non-trial firewall, that is the only one they offer .
Addresses found by "ipconfig" match those listed in what ZA found on first startup and has since set as my default ISP.
Any suggestions? I don't enjoy working without a firewall as I just lost a load of data from a Blaster infection (my Norton AV is up to date).
Many thanks
Brendan

I'd like to, but they don't offer the "free" version - it's automatically the trial version!
Any way to look through the control panel and see if I have disallowed DNS?

There are 2 columns as I recall when you instal giving the details of pro & standard. You have to select the button at the top (IIRC) to choose the standard version before proceeding. Reinstall and check carefully on the page where it seems to force to choose 'Pro' - I had this problem as well...

Check your settings. If the ZA has high for everything, all access will be blocked. Drop some to medium and set it to ask you for premission. It will be annoying initially, but you can set it to remember the sites for next time.
Cookies and pop-ups.
Some sites that use cookies or popup windows might not work properly, but by tweaking your settings, that should be fine.

Here's the link to Zonealarm free version:

You need to open ZA & remove all the filters you have set, especially the "refuse access" ones. However, I'd dl the freebie version of ZA first.

Thanks all.
I've tried Mick's solution, if that doesn't work I'll move along in alphabetical order to Nick's
Difficult to decide last night, as someone apparently sat on my broadband pipe - trying to download AdAware took me more than 15 minutes to get through the 4 lavasoft and download.com pages, and finally the downloading kicked off at 7kb/s, slowed to 4kb/s and finally gave up altogether. Restarting did nothing. Scoobynet almost, but not quite, as slow. I'll try it again tonight.

I'm using the sygate personal firewall:

Good alternative to Zonealarm and seems to work better for me.
