Default XP: Remote Desktop

Hello

I have installed Remote Desktop on my Windows XP computer at home as I wish to control it whilst I am away.

The problem is that I can't actually connect to it when I am outside of the house. i.e. If I am using another computer in the house it is fine, if I use another connection it doesn't work.

Can someone tell me how to get it to work?

Thanks!

Steve.

How are you connecting your computer to the outside world?

If it's through a router, and the router has a hardware firewall (most of them do), then it will block any traffic from outside the house, and so stop your remote desktop from working...

Also, if you're using NAT on the router then you need to use port forwarding to redirect the remote desktop ports to the desired PC.

Hello

Thank you for your suggestions. It appears that the problem is the (free) version of ZoneAlarm as it doesn't allow me to specify which ports to let through.

I guess I will have to upgrade.

Hello

And for completeness, I had to allow port 3389 through my firewall. Everything works great now.
