Printing question..... (Macs & PCs)
Need your help guys and gals
Trying to use my Epson printer on my home network, but not too sure how to do it.
Here's the spec -
PC running XP Pro
Epson Colour Stylus 680 connected via parallel port (USB available though)
Origo 4-port ADSL router
Mac G4 running Panther connected via network
Apple PowerBook running OS9 connected via network
All machines are running a static IP.
I want to be able to print from both Macs & Pc.
How do I do it?
Thanks
Dan

Thx Lightning101
Looks like a great package - bit pricey though! I could buy a printer for G4 for a fraction of the cost!
I've already got sharing between the two systems, but I'd like to print as well. However, not for that price!
Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

Have you shared the printer on the PC? It should then be accessible to the Macs. Certainly should work under OS X, as you can configure printing to a windows printer in 'printer setup utility', as for OS 9, hmm, might work

Yes, I've shared the printer on the PC, and the Mac will see it, but it's failing to connect due to an incorrect password.
I've set up an admin/installer password on the Mac, but there are NONE on XP. Any suggestions?

Admin password on XP Pro *will* exist (IIRC) but will be blank.
Assuming the defaults the admin account on XP Pro will be:
Username: "Administrator"
Password: "" (i.e. totally blank(
Cheers

Nice one Ian - will have a look at it.
I did manage to get the printer recognised, but it printed a load of garbled pages
This will NOT beat me

OK
If they're all able to talk to the printer & its gobbledigook, then ensure you have the correct mac drivers for the printer installed.
ie - it prints ok from PC when connected to PC - Check
it prints ok from MAC when connected to MAC - check???
Essentially you are using the PC as a Print Server. It's only role is in passing on information received from the MACs. It may not know what that information means, but it'll pass it on. It is up to the MACs to send the correct information so that the printer can decipher it and make it into words/pictures as opposed to gobbledigook.
So make sure the above check-points are acheivable and report back. If the MACs and PC both work properly when printer is directly connected to each respectively , then it should work as you desire.
The other stuff I wrote? Easier way of achieving same goal - printer has its own IP addy/network connection via Origo hub and both PC and MACs print to that (using the correct drivers ) instead of going via a "foreign" machine (the PC).

Dan,
i have a similar PC/Mac/Printer requirement, as i want to start using my Mac for the Internet, but still used the printer (Epson Stylus Scan2500) on my PC.
Alas, the printer drivers are only for Macos 9-ish, so i thought that a printer upgrade might help (the Epson is getting a bit old).
Thus, i fancy going for a HP PSC 2500 Photosmart all-in-one printer/flatbed fax/scanner/copier
OK, it does all the scanning, faxing, printing stuff, but also reads photo memory cards (viewed by an onboard LCD) - but - the best bit, is that it is accessible via both 802.11b and Ethernet (up to 5 PCs).
Ok, it is (only) double the cost of PCMacLAN, but if you need a new (and better) printer (scanner, fax, bake a cake) - it could be an option!!!
