I've got McAfee on mine - both the firewall and anti-virus software, I bought the online subscription which at the time I got it was £5 cheaper than the software edition in the shops and was a 2 year deal (this entitles you to every software upgrade, both in terms of patches and new releases to the software itself).

It's saved my bacon many a time by being completely up to date without me even thinking about updating it

Avast is another alternative to AVG, and the Home edition is free. I use Norton myself.

Thumbs up

AVG - It's not **** - you just need to do regular updates. they seem available most days now and do not require a reboot of the PC.

I use AOL Broadband as a service provider and one thing I found was that the update function on AVG does not work with AOL as default browser. You need to go to 'Internet Options', 'Programmes', and click the button 'Reset Web Settings...' to enable IE as default browser to allow AVG to update itself - you read it here first

I don't particularly like AVG because the auto-update feature only works when someone is logged in - great for running on servers

Works both ways - I was using McAfee and then removed it, ran AVG and it found 3 viruses and 203 infected files.

Antivirus is only as good as the last update, and the last update is only to cure the virus that came out before the update !

Oh well, at least AVG is free.
