Dell, dell, dell...
Vaios will beat the Dell on the design front that's for sure!
Have only got good things to say about the Dell Latitude D400 - ultra portable, pretty much does everything I want it to, wireless, loads of config options....
There's usually freebies on offer (memory, disk upgrades etc) but I think the Inspiron range ("Home user") are cheaper

Ive just bought a Toshiba P10-304 -P4HT 256Mb 30GB NVidia- with a beautiful 15.4" widescreen display and I can not fault it. The only thing that is missing is a DVD writer which I have elsewhere; and this is available on the similarly spec'd and priced Celeron model. Dell are definately not the best for notebook PC's, far from it. I wouldnt consider a sony Vaio either, have you seen the battery life on them? Sony wont even warrant the damned things. Toshiba are the Mercedes of notebook PC's and they have kept their reputation for a reason. This will upset the know-it-alls who frequent this board, but I bought my kit from PCWorld, where they were retailing it for less than DABS, and that was before the discount that I received. In my opinion you need to look for two things when buying a notebook PC, firstly: is the PC just a badged Mitac as the majority are, or was it manufactured by the company whos name it bears? Secondly; whats the screen quality like? This really leaves you with Tosh, IBM and Compaq, and Im not that sure about Compaq any more.

Edited to add the price: £899, but I only paid £809 with a free Antler case so Im well chuffed...
