Default Hard Disk Data Transfer Speed

I want to do some editing of video from my DV camera, but the software I am using (which I got a while back for my old PC) is complaining that my hard disk data transfer rate is not fast enough.
I'm a bit surprised at this, as although my new PC is not the most up-to-date, it should be at least as fast as my old kit.
The motherboard supposedly supports ATA 66/00, and the hard disk supposedly supports ATA 66. I'm using an 80 conductor IDE cable. Is there any tool I can use to determine if the drive is being accessed using ATA 66?

What read/write data rates should I expect for ATA 66? I'm only getting read/write rates of 3.5 Mb/sec, which is only a fraction of what I would expect.

Any ideas anybody?

Default

A proper ATA cable and not a standard IDE cable would be good check - looks thinner tighter than normal.

You have a theoretical burst rate of data transfer of 66mb/sec, but this is only short lived - also check its set properly in the BIOS and in System properties in windows.
