Default Winmodem permanently disconnecting

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice on a strange problem. I have built a pc from bits at work for someone (foc) (P2 450, 128 MB, 8 GB, W2K.)

Now his old machine wqas a p2 233 and had an external modem. This new one has an 56k internal winmodem card wheras the old one has an external US robotics 28.8K

When he tries to surf he keeps getting disconnected after a minute or two. Try it at work and all is fine. Could this be a line bias problem do you think ? If not what else could it be?

Yeh sounds like hes just got a crap connection at home or wherever he is using it. What speed is he connecting at? If its always low ie below say 44,000bps then get him to ring BT and get the gain (line volume) increased foc, that might help.

Probably his modem needs replacing with something better. A "WinModem" is "host assisted", that is, some of the processing is done by the CPU of the host machine rather than the modem doing it itself, it's a terrible idea and causes no end of trouble, they usually don't work with OEM kit either.

Cotton that doesnt explain why its fine on another phone line though does it. The modem is fine imo. Although yeh winmodems are crap compared to external ones.

'forger', It's probably nothing to do with the phoneline, it sounds to me like the modem is fine on the motherboard that's being used at work, but not on the one that's being used at home. The fact the 28k8 worked ok is why I'm led to that conclusion.
