Default Firmware updating?

Hi all

My CD RW drive is going nuts on me.
When i put a cd in, of any sort, its speeds up to what sounds like its max rpm, the pc freezes, then it slows down and keeps doing this.

But it still burns cd's ok.

How can I sort this?
Can i just flash the firmware?

If so, how do I find the manufacturer as its just a plain cd rw drive and has no make on.
thinking now, do i need to take it out and read the label, lol

well, any help would be fantastic

many thanks

~Tony~

Sounds like you're trying to burn the cd too quickly.

I used to get this problem burning 12x disks at 16x

The laser may well be gubbed then.

A replacement cd-rw should set you back about £20, probably the simplest remedy.
