That will be this one?

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25711

OK so there was a single security issue there, but the weight of the download was in the iPhoto enhancements and printer mods.

Its hardly a regular occurence though is it?

No not at all. I love Mac's and will most likely make the switch when my 6 year old machine gives up the ghost. Lets just hope not to many people move over or the ******* that spend all day smashing Windows will make the switch too.

Not to be seen defending Microsoft, but just how critical are they? Is my PC anymore vulnerable than it was yesterday or this morning before I updated it?

Probably since it's now published that a vulnerability exists, but it would take other lack of defenses to allow someone to exploit it.

Your PC is now more vulnerable simply for the reason that the holes have been exposed to the public at large. And why was it published, because if Microsoft didn't do it then the 'Security' company that found the problem would have done it for them.

Exploits can and will be written that would cause a major problem to your system without the update, regardless of other measures you have in place. There are a lot of things you can do to defend against them - I have a list here - but to be honest, applying the update is the best answer.

As Puff's said, I'm glad SUS downloads and applies the updates for me

It just gets a bit boring when an update is assumed to be so critical that if not applied immediately your PC's gonna die. As you say, there's other more important security precautions to worry about.

Half these arguments are more appropriate to Joe Public and his insecure home PC (or a Business with incompetant IT staff )
