Default NetSkyP, Win Xp and Norton

I can see you all running for cover now...

...anyway - was in my mailbox deleting all my junk, didn't even open it, and up pops a warning from Norton that I have NetskyP in my temp internet files.

So I run a virus scan and I have two occurances in my temp internet files. I run the Symantec Netsky removal tool - it says I have no infection, Virus not found.

I run Norton Virus scan again and the two occurances are still there in my temp internet files. Norton 'quarantines' them for me.

Running the upgraded Netsky removal still does not find these occurances.

What should I do?

Is is now safe, now that Norton has 'quarantined' them?

Any help appreciated!

Hi

In IE go to Tools, Internet options, delete temp Internet files. Somewhere in the Norton software should be a facility to delete the quarantine. Sometimes it's an idea to run the PC in safe mode to run a virus scan. Also remember to turn off System restore.

There's some info here about how to remove the virus & also how to remove it manually. Network associates also provide a free stand alone virus cleaning tool called Stinger. http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_101119.htm

This virus uses a Windows vulnerability & I've often seen that Norton does not protect against these types of virus. You must ensure that you use MS Windows update & make sure you have all the Critical updates installed. Think about changing your AV software, Norton often lets this type of virus though, espcially if you're not up to date with citical updates. I would strongly suggest either McAfee or Panda AV software for a home user. Also install a Firewall like Zonealarm.

You also need to be able to see multiple file extensions - which are usually a virus attachment. Open My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, View, uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

Good luck

Thanks for the advice.

Have found the delete quarantined files facility which I did with the System Restore turned off.

Now doing another scan.....fingers crossed!

Cheers,

No prob

Make sure you have all your critical updates. In IE, Tools, Windows update & follow the prompts. Install all critical updates, you can ignore driver & recommended updates.

Nick,

I already had updates in place...

....although upgrading to IE SP1 with latest mods has made it completely pants on my PC so am running Mozilla now - much better.

Can't seem to find the Virus now - which is good!

Cheers,

Rannoch
