Strange output from command window in XP ...
Does any know why this might happen?

it's not a (name) resolution issue, and believe me I have done more than reboot (re-installed TCP/IP etc).
I take it no-one has come across this before?

Have you tried flushing your dns cache.. both local & on the network dns server, try updating the server data files too..
What happens if you ping/resolve another ip??
