Default Problems with 2 PC's

My M8 just wants to surf the net, but the pc he usually uses has developed a problem and his other one which he has sat around won't load the software to run his NTL Broadband. I'll give a brief description of both problems if i may, and let me know what you IT boffs think

PC1:
When loading up Windows (98se) it just freezes on the startup screen and won't allow you to do anything. It will run in safe mode, so we tried to reinstall Windows. All went well until it re-started where it froze on the screen which says "preparing to run Windows for the first time"

PC2:
The PC (98se also) appears to run fine with no issues, but when we tried to install NTL Broadband, we kept getting "cannot launch at check.bat"

Any ideas for either PC?

Thanks in advance.

here's your best bet for PC1...

probably do a fresh install of win98se. you will need to create a emergency boot floppy. boot up on floppy, format c: and then install win98se on cdrom. at least you know the PC will have a nice and clean OS.

goes without saying that once the PC is on broadband, install firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware!

I've never done such a thing and don't really feel confident doing that

PC1:

Take a look at this when in safe mode. Follow through the steps to see if you have any programs starting up that could be causing problems.

PC2:

Not sure on this one. Try ringing NTL for a new CD, or taking a poke around the folders on the CD to see if you can install the modem by hand?

the only software needed to run ntl's broadband is the drivers for there usb network box, if you use one.

Brun did you manage to sort this out?

Is the NTL box usb ? If so plug it in, go look in hardware lists for unknown device etc and try selecting update drivers off either the menu or the properties screen. When it asks where to load drivers from, point it at the cd.
