Hotmail e-mail - trace sender
Hello,
Is there any way to trace who sent an e-mail from a hotmail account.
Bro-in-law has received some nasty e-mail from someone who obviously knows him and is involved in a student type club. It's from a hotmail account .. is there any way he can have a go at tracing where it's from?
It's more a slander on character type of mail than a obscene/graphic one but he's keen nonetheless to find out who sent it.
Any ideas?

first thing I'd do would be to check the member profile info on the sender. Some people do put 'real' location information in there, so that might aid in finding them. One assumes that you could contact hotmail staff and report and abusive email, and see if they can help.
Also, the header information from the email could possibly be used to trace where it came from, as in IP address, which could be linked to maybe an AOL dialup account or something, and this info could be used to get the CLI number of the person and then the address.

In the message headers, there should be an IP which is the addy of the machine the message was sent from.
You can cross reference it with with RIPE (if it's an European IP) but it could be spoofed.

The IP addy will come from the Borg cube that is one of Microsoft's datacenters as its sent out using hotmail
Short of lucking out with the profile info you're only bet would be the police, but I doubt they'll be interested until someone is hurt etc as I doubt hotmail would be interested in looking at their logs to track it.

Hotmaill messages used to have the IP addy of the PC (or firewall NAT or whatever) which sent it into their server. I know of somebody who got traced, caught and fired from a bank in the City...

Just use anonymous mailer - free downloads on net. And send him a couple of e-mails back. Then use his IP address to log into spam and advert sites and sign up for everything.
