getting rid of old versions of Messenger

Default getting rid of old versions of Messenger

I now have the new 6.1,but for some reason,this hasn't updated 4.7.its just added a new one,so rather annoyingly i now have 2 icons in the sys tray

anyone know how to get rid of the old one?

It doesn't update because although almost identical they are different programmes.
Windows Messenger (the one installed with XP) is required for things like Remote Assistance. To remove it, close Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, both running Messenger instances and anything else that might be using (or trying to use) Windows Messenger. Then click Start > Run and enter:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Hit OK and Windows Messenger 4.7 will be removed.

If you have more than one user account, as each logs in next time they may get a message asking if they wish to tidy up settings, or an error message.
