Secure alternative to FTP?

Secure alternative to FTP?
Want to replace FTP such that data is not prone to network 'sniffing'.
S-FTP only encrypts usernames and passwords, right?
Can SSH be used to do all the work of FTP?
Also, the FTP commands are run as part of a batch script. If I was to use SSH, how would I get the batch script to open an SSH session and transfer (put) the files to the destination host?

You can use sftp, or tunnel ftp (or indeed rcp, samba, etc) through ssh, or just use scp.
Edit:
As for automating logins, you can do that with a public key and having that key on authorised on the destination server, but I don't really like that from a sysadmin point of view.
