Angry Diallers ????

Can anybody on here offer me a bit of advise, I have just received my monthly NTL phone bill and got a lovely suprise of £53 worth of premium number calls. Having just spent ages on the phone to some dimwit at Ntl it appears that these numbers have been accessed via my dial up connection. Luckilly for me I was at work when some of the numbers were accessed. I have told Ntl that I have had trouble with my connection failing whilst on the net, and when I try to re-connect it says that a connection is already open. I found a "dialer" installed on my computer which I have deleted and I presume this was the culprit. Ntl will not divulge who the numbers belong to for data protection reasons.
Does anyone know of my right in this matter and will it be worth passing the numbers onto the Police computer crime division.

Cheers Deano

I expect they are **** diallers inadvertantly downloaded whilst surfing the internet. No, it doesnt mean we know you surf **** sites LOL.

You need to download adaware and spybot search & destroy. They are free and once installed and ran, will clean your PC of any nasty stuff.

Out of interest, what was the dialler called that you deleted? It will probably still be there in the registry so get cleaning

don't know the name, I just deleted the folder named dialer, the conection that kept appearing was called "diddi". i shall try and download these programs you suggested. Thanks for the help, called ntl back and they have now charged me an extra pound a month to bar all premium numbers. Is it not illegal for somebody to download a file to my computer to dial these numbers ??.

"Is it not illegal for somebody to download a file to my computer to dial these numbers ??."

Probably not illegal in many countries and I think you're in for a whopper of a legal bill if it comes to extradition.

First you have to prove who it was that entered your orifice (portal) in the first place.

You know, Im now getting telephone ****ing spam. My phone rang tonight, I answered it.. nothing strange there.. then I had a recorded message congratulating me for being a winner. Of course, I put the phone down. I then thought - you little ****ers so picked up the phone to call NTL. Low and behold, the message was still playing! I could not get an outside line...

WAR!

Soulgirl, just downloaded Ad-aware and it is scary how much cr@p it found and numerous dialers.
Thanks all for the advise. Worrying thing is that I have no idea what sites were dialled and ntl will not divulge this info, I would have thought that a so called responsible company would bar dubious numbers. But of course it is easy money for them. Scumbags.

It is also a good idea to download and run the Spybot one too... http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

It says donate, but you dont have too, just scroll down to the download link. It picks up things that AdAware might not have. I always run the two simultaneously.

In fact, I did donate $10 - simply because they are providing a bloody good free service.

You're kidding me?

NTL will not tell you what numbers have been dialed from your home line?

HTF can they justify your bill!

It's like me saying "you stole £53 from an old lady, goto jail" - like where is the proof?

Get angry and ask for supervisors. Also, find an 0800 number for them & start creating on that & get them to phone you or get transfered.

Or if you know the numbers & they are UK - ring up Oftel in London EC4 & ask their advise. They are normally very helpful.

But, you normally have to <click> accept on these things, so you could be stuffed.

The trouble is, usually, these dialler get installed when you are trying to download something. That something is usually not legal anyway such as cracks. People click yes assuming it is taking them to the download for the crack when in fact it is just a 'yes, please install your stupid fecking dialler on my pc' button.

If you run the Adaware and Spybot each week, day, second (ok, thats ****), you should be fine.

I had this didi dialler and indeed, I think it came via a warez site (that'll teach me).

I caught the bugger dialling twice, and then got rid of it. From what I can recall the dialler links to a server in Guinea-Bisau (I looked it up via google)

Loads of Americans have been caught out with large bills. If the thing dialled more than the twice I found it (redialling after the freesrve link had dropped- i stopped it just after connection) then I shall certainly argue the toss with BT.

The people who install these dialers for you take advantage of vulnerabilities in applications such as Internet Explorer so that you in fact need do nothing other than browse to the wrong site. Good reason to keep your machine patched.

Unhappy

Thanks for all your input without going down the pervy **** master way!!.
I did also download the search and destroy Karen and yes it did find lots more unwanted junk.
Rang oftel today who said they get upto fifteen people a day ring with the same problem several of them running into the high hundreds of pounds in call charges. They said I would have to pay and try and recover the money through a set up called ICSTIS who are volunteers that regulate premium numbers. I dont hold much hope of anything coming of it if the responsible company is abroad. So I llok like bolting the stable door and improving my security.
I have got a new computer coming on saturday, and have bought norton anti- virus and firewall , will this be sufficient along with ad-aware and search and destroy ?.

Cheers Deano

Upgrade to Broadband & don't attach a phoneline to your modem - best way for you I think. You should be able to get it in Chesterfield?

Dialers can't dial out over BB obviously & if there is no modem or phoneline attached to modem, there's bugger all it can do.

Me? I have a router on the network which dials my ISP & nothing else. It cannot dial anything unless I ask it to Plus I generally don't accept unknown software from dodgy sites

Also - pays not to check the tick-box for "always accept" type prompts

Tried that , not available here with ntl so I shall price it up with someone else, any ideas?. This is most likely a stupid question but what do bt use for broadband or is it only available in areas where all the phone lines are underground and not on telegraph poles.

Are NTL cable to you?

BT run ADSL over a normal phone line (more or less)

Check with your postcode on www.bt.com/broadband
