Default Help: Hard disk failure

Hello

I have a strange problem with my computer this morning: Neither of the hard drives work. I have swapped the IDE cable, and when that didn't work put them on the DVD-Rom channel but they still refuse to work. I can hear the drive whirring round. The DVD drives work fine.

So, is there a hard drive controller on the motherboard that can have blown? Any suggestions as to what to do now?

Edit: Mmmm. And it's magically come back to life. So is my motherboard on it's way out?

Thanks,

Steve.

How long have you had the machine - battery backup for the BIOS could be on its way out.

Try clearing the BIOS and doing an IDE auto detect and then re-save settings.

Lightbulb

my old man had a similar problem - IIRC his HD was a quantum fireball or something like that. Took the drive out and there was a little hole and scorch mark on one of the chips on the HD circuit board.

We got a second hand HD off ebay and swapped the cards over - job done, £30 .
