XBOX Help
went out and got myself an Xbox today, also got the starter pack for xbox live.. what a swizz
my adsl line comes into the house downstairs behind the tv so I thought "great, just plug it in"
I found out that wasnt the case, so went back out and bought another cable that I thought was already supplied, plugged it into the socket...sod all
My pc's are upstairs and I really dont want to be running a cable back from the pc to the Xbox, so what I need help with is:
what do I need to plug into the adsl socket behind my TV to enable me to plug the xbox into?
I dont mind disconnecting it from the pc cos I wont be using both at the same time.
If anyone can tell me what I need or a link to a site with what I have to buy I'd be gratefull.
Thanks in advance
Phil

You need to disconnect the adsl modem from the pc, but and here's the bad bit, it may be usb from adsl modem to pc.
Alternatively if your pc has a network card (nic) get yourself a crossover cable plug one end into pc the other into the xbox and away you go

Perhaps the easy option is to buy an ethernet modem which you can then move around the house without it being connected to the PC (If you wanna be really clever then go the 'wireless' route although this costs a fair bit once you had up the access point, gaming adapter etc etc)
I've just bought a wireless router and a card for my laptop plus a wireless gaming adapter which means I have a DLink DSL-300G ethernet modem for sale if you're interested?
It's less than six months old and the only reason it's for sale is cos the wireless access point that I bought yesterday has a built in modem. It's been brilliant and never missed a beat in the time i've owned it!!!!
I think they retail for around the 60-70 quid mark??
Good luck anyway

so basically your saying that if I get one of these ethernet modems, I can plug it straight into the adsl socket on the wall, then into the xbox , and thats it ?
Is there anything I can buy that would work like a "splitter" from the main socket downstairs, making it into 2 adsl sockets (I'm a bit thick with connection types)
I have network cards on my pc's but as said before, they're upstairs in a spare room and I dont like the idea of running a cable from them to the xbox, and yes, the adsl modem i have for the pc's is a usb one.
I dont mind buying the extra bits, but I think its a bit unfair of microsoft to sell the xbox live pack, which dosnt work unless yo have a router or ethernet thingy.
Phil
thanks for the help so far

Get a wireless router, and connect the xbox wirelessly to your network. It's a bit pricey, but that's what I've done, (with a Linksys 54g router) and it works really well.
Edited to say I'm using cable for the connection rather than adsl, but you can get adsl modems / routers that do the same job

Phil,
The gear I've just bought is
Linksys WAG54G wireless access point (Modem/Router/Wireless AP)
Linksys WPC54G pcmcia card (For my laptop)
Linksys WGA54G wireless gaming adapter
It ain't cheap going the wireless route but definitely worth it
I ordered my gear from http://www.nascenttech.com and they did me a good deal in fact when I called them. (Cheaper than everywhere else on the web in fact!!!)
I spoke to a guy there called Stuart Brown if that's of any help.....
Good luck
Nick
