Setting up an LCD display.
Bought a Sony 15in LCD display for my pc today.
1.On 800x600 the quality of the picture is quite dissapointing. The definition of the icons on my desktop look inferior compared to my old crt.On 1024x768 everything is a bit small.
2.Also had to turn the brightness right down, and the backlighting too,bit of a strain on the old eyes.
Any tips/advice.
Its a 15 inch, what resolution does everyone have it on?

As XRS stated - you must have it set to its native resolution or it will look poo.
Also try setting the screen fonts to "clear type" as it is better for LCD monitors

Sony SDM HS53.(15 inch.)
According to the set up disc they recommend 1024x768,previously i'd always worked at 800x600 on my 15 inch CRT.
You're right though,at 800x600 it looks awful.At 1024x768 it looks great,but i have to have it a lot closer.

LCD panels work at a fixed resolution. Nothing is "drawn" onto the screen like a CRT, each pixel is individually controlled.
It probably runs at a native resolution of 1024x768, either 60Hz or 75Hz. Anything else will be "scaled" and won't look as sharp.
If you're running Windows XP, visit the Microsoft ClearType tuner site to make your fonts look the best.
It will take your eyes a few days to get used to the display as it's so much sharper than a CRT. If you bought online, I think you have 14 days to return it under the distance selling regulations, so spend a little time working with it.
If you have DVI as well as VGA out on your graphics card, and the panel supports DVI, switch over to that as it will usually improve picture quality quite a bit.
Cheers,
Alex
