Where's the computer seen going to go next?
Computers have gone from simple word processers, to game stations, with music facilities and now with the ability to watch tv, capture and edit your own video.
So what is going to come next/what is in the pipeline?

Total intergration to home and life.
Order foods when the fridge is empty
turn on the lights when you get in.
alert you when you get broken into.
tell you that the cats need feeding.

I think it will be more user freindliness, nothing is impossible nowadays but it requires a bit of tech knoledge to get it done imho, so next step i recon would be more ai based maybe talk to it to get stuff done and it knows what you mean
at the moment everything is just a new way of doing same stuff

On the ordering food when fridge empty thing, you can get a fridge that does that, not sure of the make, but it's got an integrated computer in it, and you tell it what you put in the fridge and when stuff is used and it works out when things are needed and connects to the supermarket and orders stuff, rather cool.
PC's controlling your home phone system, heating, security and soudn stuff will no doubt be next.

I realise you *can* get that teckno stuff if you pay the ££££££ I'm talking about when it all becomes mainstream and part of everyones day to day life.
Ditto with the last comments
anything electrical will be talking to the mainframe
" sorry susie cant come to the phone right now as she is in the bedroom in conference with Mr R Rabbit". lol

As said above: BMS (building management) systems for the home will be next.
And perhaps voice recognition that actually works
It's close, but it still has a bit of a 'mare when I'm talking to it

Microsoft are doing a bloody good job of moving the PC into the living room - Media Edition, Xbox. The PC will make the TV redundant, my next TV is a bloody big monitor and a silent running PC. Teletext my ****, give me Google.
Someone will write a malicious trojan/virus that will network as many pcs as it can get his hands on to provide super computing power.
Some idiot attempting to kill it will label it 'Skynet' after the system in Terminator.
It'll eventually get into the defense systems and, deeming humans insane and irrelevant, trigger a mass launch of intercontinental missiles, which will in turn send humans underground in small guerilla groupings in the vague hope of beating them.
'Skynet' then realising the humans powered it's platforms will make and release machines into the world to capture and turn them into human batteries....

okay I'm bored and I can't be arsed to finish the tetris game I'm writing.

In the future ... computers (and their associated software) will eventually be good enough to be sold as white goods - at that point, people will stop ringing me up to ask why General Protection is trying to read their hard drive
I'll wake up from this dream soon ...

Computer integrated fridges - don't make me laugh!!!
I can just see it now - you open the door to find a paperclip in your butter saying "I notice you seem to be writing a letter, do you want me to **** it up for you?"

Lets face it - thirty years ago it was predicted that we would all be wearing silver suits, eating meal pills and travelling around in hover-cars before the end of the (last)century. Predictions are the last thing that you should believe!

I used to do a little research on it, and wrote a paper on neural networks.
I reckon its probably at least 100 years off yet, but that is what everyone is striving for.
Functioning neural networks could be around in 20 years, but they will be mainly based on rules.
Although i'm probably jumping a little ahead here.
In the near future, what will be the big thing????

Markus - I think that it is the LG one.
Well I'm waiting for the first virus to hit my SPV phone (and then wait for the the first anti virus program
)
Integration of the PC (or PC technology) into the home and car. Improvements in wireless technology are really going to make this a reality. The introduction of wireless power could also be on the horizon. There are developments of Bluetooth technology looking at delivering power over wireless connections.
Other than that, I'm not sure...

I've seen the first pass at atomic based computing which does away with the binary system, kind of means we'll have to start again with something else. If it does happen it won't be for 10-15 years and could be another leap forward in the way we do things.
