Finally got around to setting up my webcam this weekend.

Running XP Pro and Outlook XP. Comes with this .NET thing.

This is a bit of a double question, but -

1. What is the difference between .Net (passport) and MSN Messenger?

2. My dad is on W2K - what do I need/how do I setup to use my webcam to talk to him?


Bit of a dumb question, but knowledge is all powerful!!!

I think you can just do it all through the latest version of the Messenger software.

To answer your original question, you use a .NET passport to sign in to MSN or Windows Messenger. It can also be used to sign into passport enabled websites automatically.

So, being a newbie to "conferencing" what's the deal, do I just make sure that the recipient is logged on, and type in their email address to my messenger (bearing in mind, the person in question is using the W2K messenger)

How do I link to it in my ScoobyNet profile?

I've put in my handle in the profile, but how do I get the little icon etc?

When you enter and save your MSN details into your profile, the MSN icon should appear automatically in the Postbit section of posts you make.

Windows Messenger has a habit of mis-behaving like this, even when you have switched off all of the options of auto-starting etc. The easiest way to stop it is to uninstall Windows Messenger completely. If you then want to, re-install it from the Microsoft site, set the options NOT to automatically start with Windows / sign in on when internet connection is detected and it should behave itself.

To remove Windows Messenger from XP (I have done this many times, but you use these instructions at your own risk):

1. Close Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Messenger, MSN Messenger and any other program that might use Windows Messenger (e.g. Outlook)

2. Click Start > Run and paste the following line into "Open" line:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

then click OK.

3. (Optional) Download and re-install Windows Messenger from here

Sorted now - me being a numptie!!

I've removed MSN as above as I still had an earlier version which caused all sort of conflicts with the updated version. Fingers crossed it'll now be OK!
