Hi all

Built up an el-cheapo PC from components off Ebuyer but it is completely dead.

With the exception of the fan on the PSU just slightly turned when I plugged in the power, last thing I did, but nothing since.

AMD 2500+
PC Chips M/B
256Mb
ATI 64 Sapphire AGP

I think the PSU might be toast but on trying it on disconnected from everything else still nothing

Ideas anyone ?

Rich

Check the connector onto the mobo from the front power switch

Also put a multimeter across the contacts in one of the plugs that fit HD/CD etc. You should get around 5 volts between red and black and 12 volts between yellow and black.

Check the jumper switch is not in the "Clear Cmos" position. The pcchips boards I have used all left the factory in this position.

Was the heatsink properly on the PSU when you turned it on? If not, you will probably have fried your CPU.

You could just have a faulty motherboard.

Do the hard disks spin up, do any fans come on at all?

I've seen this sometimes when building PCs.

Try changing bios jumper settings to alter the FSB e.t.c
You might find it will boot then. Try setting it up with "slow" settings by setting the bus speeds lower than what you think they should be.

(Forgot to say = remove the bios battery and all power, re-set the bios via the jumper, put battery back in, then connect power again and try it).

I take it there's no power LED on the motherboard? (usually a green LED)

I once had to stick a PCI VGA card in to get it to boot to the bios screen, then tweak a few settings before it would boot normally, using AGP graphics.

Hope this helps.

Tony

When fault finding look for the simple stuff first.

Sounds to me like the PSU was not on 240 volts @ 50 Hz. There should be a switch to select between US standard voltage/frequency and UK standard voltage/frequency. If you select the wrong voltage you will kill the PSU.

Thumbs up

I'd go with Matt's suggestion. Very common with PC chips boards.

Had the same problem before

ten to a penny its the memory chips,,

try another stick, and you will probably find it works

its usually a sign of bad memory

Cool

Whooooooaaaaaaa

T H E P O W E R O F S C O O B Y N E T ! ! ! !

Well that was interesting and Mother-in-Law's PC is now well on the way to XP heaven

A+ to Matt for pointing out the reset bios jumper setting, I cannot believe that I missed that one having spent over 10 years in the IT industry !!! Someone sack me . . . .

F- to PC Chips for an oh so slight ?faux pas? sending out brand new units with the reeset enabled, quite outstanding.

Simply amazing !

thanks again.
