repair a corrupt excel file?

Hello
Does anyone know of any shareware software that will allow me to repair a corrupt excel file? Advanced Excel Repair seems to be able to read it but wants me to pay for it. I would rather loose the file than pay for some software.
If only people would save stuff to the network like i tell them or at least back it up
