I regularly use PC Anywhere on broadband. If the remote is behind a NAT router, you will need to forward the ports PCA uses to the PC you wish to control, and I think you will only be able to access one PC on that network.

I would not use VNC if I were you as you can hack the password in about 20 seconds!, if you use PCA make sure you use a long password and turn on encryption otherwise you will only regret it! :-(

I use Sunbelt Remote Administrator, seems ok.

Anyone else tried this?

Wouldn't recommend using either of them over the Internet anyway, rather connect via VPN then use.

I agree, would rather not use these kinds of software via the web, and when I have had to use PCAW via the web I have always changed the ports that I have been using as well as running encryption etc over the connection.

Use remote desktop... if you have a 2k or xp machine.
RDP 5.1 uses 128bit cypher and is about as safe as you can get, also its much more flexible than anything i've used before...
you can download the 5.1 client from Microsoft for your 2k machine.
server2003 comes already with it.
Have a browse on the MS knowledge base and you'll see the benefits.

Thanks for all your replys.

I would only need it for home use to help the family when they have problems that i can or may be able to solve with out driving over to were they live.

don't worry about security then, only get them to double click the icon when you want in and get them to make sure it is closed when u finish.

To go against everyone here, I'd use VNC then

It's totally free. And if you're only planning on using it for remote support of your family, and not for business use, then it doesn't need to be running all the time.

When you wanna terminal in;

They run the VNC server.
Hover the mouse over the VNC icon will show it's IP address
You then terminal in using that IP address

When you've finished doing what you're doing you can kill the server yourself, which will then chuck you off automatically.

As long as it's not left running with the computer unattended there's no threat in running it over the internet.

Out of the remote control packages available, I rate Remote Administrator over both vnc (yuk) and pcanywhere. It is small, can be run off a floppy with no installation required if needed, allows you to gateway through machines to other hosts without prior setup on the host/gateway etc, file transfer, telnet etc, is secure enough for general use and only requires 1 TCP port for any of the features you want to use. The port is easily adjustable.

You can easily adjust the colour palette and refresh rate which allows for far better remote control performance IMO. For remote sites where we don't use VPN to connect, we use this stuff and have never, ever looked back.
