For the networking people on here, where do you all get your cat5 cable, i need probably 4 bits of 10 metre cat5 cable but online retailers seem to want silly money for it, even ebay is expensive once you add postage (which seems to be charged per cable rather than per package).

Does anyone know where to get some at a decent price?

Cheers

David

Thumbs up

I get mine from a local electrical supplier for around £30 for a 500m roll, RJ45 connectors from Maplins www.maplin.co.uk at a few pence each, with a crimper for around £15. Its a lot more than you need but may work out cheaper.

the crimping tool will prolly have diagrams on the back. there are 2 standards. use either. for crossover cables use both standards (one on either end).

My crimping Tools don't have a guide on the back. See here for examples

Also, for cable try Wickes. My father in law always buys his cable (cat5, elecxtrical, etc. from there)

What exactly are you creating the cables for? Direct PC to PC or PC to hub/switch/router? Direct PC to PC you will need a Cross Over cable and PC to Hub/Switch/Router you require standard straight cables.

Straight cables are more common so I have detailed below the correct connection method.

Straight cables - End A White/Orange, Orange, White/Green, Blue, White/Blue, Green, White/Brown, Brown
End B White/Green, Green, White/ Orange, Blue, White/Blue, Orange, White/Brown, Brown

Darren

Edited to add bit about ends

My housemate bought most of his kit off ebay when setting up his lab for the CCIE practical.
