iMovie Mpeg4 playback on PC?

A friend has put together some video on his Mac with iMovie which outputs as Mpeg4 (among other things). Mpeg4 seems to be the best format on his Mac but won't, apparently, playback on a Windows PC. Is there a way of getting it to work on a PC (XP)?
The .avi output is blocky and a bit crap!

Yes there are MPEG4 players available for Windows - as I use one as my phone creates MPEG4. I can't remember the software I use but I think I got it from the SonyEricsson website.
I will post it up when I get home
