Chaps I need help with a problem I have just caused myself!
The girl friends laptop wouldn't boot and I couldn't recover it so I said not to worry as I would just install over the top of it and her files would be there as i'd use the current file system blah d blah.
However over writing xp home edition to xp professional I have found that all her files are missing but all the old apps folders are still there.
All I can think of is she put all her files in the my documents folder and its been over written on the new install because of profiles etc.
Are there any file recovery programs out there I can use to try and get back her files?
Any help in achieving this feat will be much appreciated as you will be saving my neck She isn't too impressed as you may imagine

Try this - go into my computer then c: - make sure all files and folder are set to unhidden - there will be a user folder from the previous install - in documents and settings - e.g. claire folder.

Are the old apps folders there but not able to view properties/open them?
Or can you open them fine and they r just empty?
If the former then I have had this, its something to do with folder permissions and SIDs. It basically has wiped file permissions fo rthe folders and you need to turn simple filesharing off and reassign perms.
If its none of the above then ignore me

On computers where Windows XP (Home and Professional) was pre-installed at the factory, a left-over file may cause data loss if an in-place upgrade or installation is later done using a Windows XP CD-ROM. The user settings that may be lost include things such as shortcuts, Startup items, and files in the Shared Documents folder. The file in question that may cause this damage is in the \Windows\System32 folder and is called Undo_guimode.txt. ( \Windows is the default name for the Windows XP home folder. It may be different on some computers.)
The quickest way to prevent this problem is to rename this file. Navigate to the \Windows\System32 folder in My Computer or Windows Explorer. Find the file and right-click it. Select Rename, and give it a name such as not_undo-guimode.txt. Already done an in-place upgrade and the settings are lost? The only recourse will be restoring the files from backups.
