I used fasthosts and had a nightmare when I tried to transfer a couple of domains, took over a week several faxes, letters of complaint, a complete joke, would never use them again.
I use www.oneandone.co.uk for all my domains/webspace very cheap.

1&1 are launching in the USA in a couple of weeks time, they are currently offerering 3 years free hosting for pre-registrants.
I vthink the only downside is thhat tech support for the free package is by e-mail only.

You pay for the support when it all goes **** up. If you're on a tight budget go for one of the big boys. YOu'll be just another user to them. Go with titan and you'll be treated like a proper customer - they'll even send you polite personal e-mails when you mis-read the bill and dont pay the Vat

I need 80Gb of bandwidth and my old server done a great job for a year ( at a good price ). Now theyve gone a bit sloppy and Im looking someone else. But no one is anywhere near a good price. Its going to cost about £250 a MONTH Any advice?

jon,
We would colocate your server for £125 per month but you'd only get 20gb for that, then its an extra 125ukp per month for an agreed 20 gb so I would say you're not far off. If you dont agree an up front we charge 50ukp for each 5gb. That's using your server as well and from you're description I would say you were using either a shared or dedicated server (i.e you don't own it and you probably don't manage it). We are not best set up for dedicated servers, we would lease you one but would look to recoup the cost over the first year.
What are you trying to host, is it just a basic(ish) site that uses lots of b/w? Does it need to be on it's own server. Mail me offline if you want to discuss further.

All you need to do is get a machine that you will use as your server, get it setup how you want it to look, and ship it to a co-locator somewhere.
Things to consider is security - do you have the time and expertise to keep you box secure?
Bandwidth/traffic - how much will you need need/how much will you produce? Most co-locators give you a specific traffic allocation in your package, then charge you when you go over. From experience it can be very easy to exceed you limit and be presented with a bit bill.
Choose you co-locator carefully. Cheap doesn't always mean bad, but check what you'll get for your money. If you box crashes and need to be rebooted you'll not be best please if they take a day to get around to it! http://www.chorver.net whilst no the cheapest are top blokes, and have handy facilities like web-based main's outlet control so you can power-cycle servers yourself if needs be.
If you don't need much bandwidth then getting an ADSL link in at home with a static IP address might do you, which is clearly a very cheap way to go. Again choose your provider carfully!
cheers

>Hypothetically how difficult would it be to buy your own
>server and use that to host your domain - what is involved?
You have to buy it, install the OS, install IIS and any database software, find an ISP that colocates (email me), go an install the server, get an IP address, point your domain at that IP address and Bobs you're uncle. OR you can pay for a dedicated server where the ISP owns and manages the server, you pay more but depends on how much you want to handle yourself.
Bandwidth is the biggest issue, it is expensive in the UK.
You *could* host it on the end of a ADSL line but would need to make sure you have a static IP address and then you would need firewalls etc...
Drop me an email if you want any more info.
Edited to say, sorry, just read Jamies comments which I have mostly repeated Doh !
