I've sort of inherited a PS/2 which has been used and abused by my cousins. It's been superceded by a PS/2 silver because it doesn't work.
So... I've taken it apart and got the dust, crumbs and other crapulence out of it. It reads disks some of the time, and some of the time it just comes up with a disk read error. But when it does work it's pretty good.
What I want to know is this. Do they just pack up and die anyway, and if so does anybody know what a reasonable lifetime is? Do they have any particular quirks that I need to expect? I mean, it's free so I'm not about to complain but there's a possibility that some other more worthy cousins may be about to get it and they'll be gutted if it packs up in a week so I'd be better off keeping it...
Opinions welcome

A new laser would make it good as new. I just got for free a PS2 () with the same symptons.
I'd recommend trying this first though as it can be fixed for free with a little tweak similar to the way PS1 lasers can be adjusted.

Each PS2 is designed to last 12 months and 1 day from the day it was bought.
After that it is no longer able to read discs, then you ring Sony and they charge you £60 for a refurbished one !

The life expectancy of my PS/2 was NIL days after fitting my mod chip
But that aside, mine was having trouble reading discs, so I took it apart and cleaned the laser with Isopropanyl alcohol and a cotton bud and it woz as good as new again.
I also had trouble with the drawer opening and closing, this I cured with a smear of sylicon grease on the narrow runner on the underside of the drawer

Had mine since the first version 4's came out, must be 3-4 years?
Got it modded straight away as soon as Neo 4 came out
Got a hundred or so games and it works just like a new one.
Its never missed a beat.

V4's 4 years ago? Surely not. The PS2 only came out in the UK in 2000.
I bought mine in April 2001 and it lasted until Nov 2003.
I then blew it up trying to repair it
At least my PS1 lasted 3.5 years before dying. Thankyou Sony

PS2 was released in November 2001.
Mine has trouble with a PS1 dance mat game, but the rest of the time it works fine.
Anyone advise how to get to the laser to clean it? I tried this once, but after removing the 20th screw gave in!

Dan - Piece of cake. There are 8 or 10 screws on the bottom of the case under the square covers. Remove these, flip PS2 upright again, carefully remove top cover from back to front (over the front ports) and over to the right hand side. Be careful not to tear the power/eject ribbon cable. The ribbon cable is stuck to the top of the DVD drive with a sticker, remove this.
With the lid laying to the righthand side of the case you can then remove the 4 tiny screws on the lid of the PS2 drive.
Plug in and eject the tray, then switch off the PS2. You can then remove the DVD drive lid get to the laser You won't be able to remove the DVD lid with the tray inside as its held in place by the magnet on the spindle.

yes they did.they were trying to stop the modchip developers.so they changed the insides.
My mate got one of the first ones out and im sure his was a version 3 model
I dont think there were any version 1 and 2's in the uk.These were American and Jap consoles mostly.
There were v3,v3r,v4,bottom rom with no gap,top rom with no gap, bottom rom with gap etc etc .I think they are upto version 9 now??
Mine was bought May 2001 as i have reciept in front of me.

Thanks Dunc, but I threw it with its severely carbonated motherboard in the bin, just kept a few bits for spares, ready for the next time. Learnt my lesson though!
Cheers,
Mark.
