Just got hold of a netgear switch (the plug and play variety), just waiting to sort out the powersupply.
But I just remembered, that last time I spoke to one of their tech monkies, he said you were only allocated one IP address, and thus could only use one device at a time.
So if what he is saying is right if I have my cable modem, pc, and xbox going through the switch, it's not going to work as that will be two devices!?
Did he have his facts wrong? Surely you can share DSL on a home network?

I have cable on a wireless router, and three machines all sharing my broadband. I linked my initial broadband addressed net card to cable/DSL port on router/hub and IP address is uploaded to router.

You need a router to assign the ip addresses,
something like this :

Sorry, just re-read and you say you have a switch
The techies are right, you need to buy a Router to allow more than one device to share your cable connection.
You can use an old PC (with two network cards) if you have access to one.

Argh, so not gonna work with just a switch! MORE money! And I don't even need a switch!
My friend has an ADSL router he said I could have, but and Adsl one isn't going to work with blueyonder (DSL) is it!?

I didn't say it couln't be done - all you have to do is set up 1st computer to have 2 network cards instead of 1. 1st network card needs to hold permanent IP address. Use second net card to link the two PC's together.
Run internet setup wizard and tell it that you computer connect to internet through a LAN and will find the 2nd net card in 1st PC - as easy as that. YOu can bay net cards for £7 from e-buyer.com

with blueyonder dead simple to set up as I run 6 PC's on a network all with access at any one time. However you'll will need a router.
In self care at blueyonder you can log in and see what IP address is registered. Then when you get you router, set it up so that it clones the IP addy of the PC that is registered. You can then add extra PC's at will having set them to auto detect settings under the LAN section in Connections.
Then any PC/device will intrnet access at anytime. However, be warned if you have network config problems Blueyonder will not help as they will only help for the PC/IP address that is registered.

FrenchBoy thanks for those links too..
Think router will be fine, its' only my pc / xbox for now, and possibly a laptop soon from work. So four port router should be dandy! Just don't like spending money lol!

I happen to have my Linksys router, recently replaced on my BY connection with a wireless one, sitting in my garage that I could be persuaded to sell cheap . . .
