Question

Can anyone recommend any web sites which list Region 1 DVDs, which won't play on multi-region DVD players?

Mine is multi-region, but I've heard about some discs which won't play even on multi-region players, more so now that there's a new encoding system being used (RCE?).

RCE are designed to play on the region they are sold in but some palyers that are multi region will play them.
the best way to test it is to either buy a cheep RCE disk or borrow one.
Ive just ordered S.W.A.T and "hope" it will play on one of my DVD players , ive got an expencive Sony that will only play R2 DVD's, it wont play CDR's or anything like that but the sound and picture quality are 2nd to non on my plasma and ive also got a cheep Philips that plays everything you can throw at it and ou can set the region.

Most multi-region players can be tricked into playing RCE discs. Either:

1, Set the player region manually. The RCE disc sees a region 1 player, so plays with no problems.

or for multi-region players that only have auto region selection:

2, Put in a non-RCE region 1 disc first, and let the player read the menu. Eject it and put in the RCE region 1 disc. The disc will see a region 1 player, and will play.

This seems to work for most people.

Another technique is to load the disc but press STOP before the menu comes up. Then use the 'time search' feature to go directly to 00:00:01 in the movie; this bypasses the nasty little script on the disc and goes straight into the film. This trick works on old Toshibas like mine, which won't play them any other way.
