get some gloves to warm your hands then:

check you can ping outwards to other devices on the network, if you can't change the cable (just for peace of mind) then check network card speed and duplex settings then check subnet mask and default gateway (if necessary)

Perhaps the port in the hub/switch has blown, try another port if you have a spare one. also check that other pc's on the same hub/switch can ping each other. perhaps the whole hub/switch has also gone.

You are reinstalling that it itself presents a whole stack of problems of getting back mail etc etc

have you got a backup if so what was used to create it?

jase I had this as well not long ago round a 2k dc etc, time to get some spares sorted hubs, routers, switchs etc, get some notes together & do regular backups... I learnt the hardway!..

But now I can rest assured the whole place can go up in smoke & I can get everything running again quicky..

Have since moved away from exchange, use pop boxes one less thing to look after.go wrong!

Good Look, email me if you need any help

thing is its pretty much a static kind of server

only used for email and a 3rd party printing software that links into unix box.

I did do backups but it was on an internal SLR drive that came with the compaq.

Even had a backup server , tested it about a year ago , worked fine and guess what in the hour of need it would not power up

I have seen this problem before on NT4. The only way I have fixed it before is to remove the network from the network properties. Also remove the card from the Hardware configuration in Control panel (Make sure you have all the drivers and the like before hand)

Reinstall the card after a reboot. 90% chance that this will fix your problem. If this does not work do the same again AND change the NIC.

The UPS was not doing its job then, I'd think about a better one

It should be more than capable of handling a large power spike. Ones we have at work a so huge, even some of the desktop ones feel like they have concrete bricks in them
