Just testing the water really...

I'm think of setting up a small side-line in building PC's for people and wanted to see how much interest this would generate?

Obviously these would be cheaper than anything over the counter, could be built to specific requirements and I could also offer overall support if required.

Would anyone go for this??

Moderators - Apologies if you consider this to be advertising. I'm just asking on here because its such a thriving community!

doobie.

Do you honestly believe you can beat Dell (for example) If you ever became a competitor (in any significant profit making way) Dell could lower their prices and force you out of the market. In addition, they have guarantees and warantees, which you would find hard to provide (3yr on site for £100 anyone) and good technical support.

Don't mean to be a harbinger of doom, but the above is why I don't build PCs for a living. Other people do it bigger and better.

Yes Dell are very good.

Damo,

I can source cheap components inc flat panel monitors so although I'm not gonna make a packet - I think there is a market.

...have also considered selling the monitors on alone - brand new and boxed just without warrantee (and no they're not dodgy!)

Maybe instead of going for the cheap end of the market, you should aim for the expensive "alienware" end. No expense spared custom PC's ? just a thought.

Absolutely - like I said - built to spec really.

To be honest I'm just trying to make some extra each month. Not ripping anyone off, just using my expertise to provide a service of some kind.

I've also considered a small consultacy - advising very small companies or individuals on anything from Office applications to large networks and domains.

Basically I want to retire early and am not afraid to work hard for it!!!

Shhhhhhh!!! just make non-proprietory components, you'll be sorted!!
dont tell anyone i said, though

BB

PS: I wouldn't buy a fookin Dell piece of to55 if it was the last PC on the planet!!! (for the record)

PS: good luck with the venture - if you dont try, you'll never know!!
