Just downloaded the Cyberlink MP3 plug in (Quick download on dial-up, about 5 mins. Very trouble free) and have a quick Q about configuration.
It states...
This page allow you to configure mp3 encoding preferences for your windows media player for windows XP.

It then offers 4 different bitrate drop down options that contain within each, bitrates from 64kbps all the way to 320 kbps.

Now, for the highest quality (presuming the bitrate options are what it's all about - I dunno) what do I set it too?

There is also an encoding option box that once ticked will give use variable bitrate Tick it or not?

Thanks fellas.

320 = highest quality, 64 = lowest.

I've had mixed results with the variable bitrate. It basically tries to work out the lowest birate it can get away with for certain bits of the track. It mostly works, but sometimes it gets it wrong and tracks can sound a bit substandard imho. Best thing to do is try it and see if you're happy with the result.

I find that 160 or 192 kbps gives best compromise between quality & file size

160bps and 192bps are optimal as above

I'd also check other settings too, as some MP3 software place a 15Khz low pass filter or bandwidth on(basically you loose your treble above 15Khz) If there is this option it needs to be off or as high as it goes.

Also make sure you have the processing levels set as high as they go and Digital audio correction switched on.
