how do i? me and a friend have come up with a cool idea for a pc peripheral and are gonna do some research and development, whats the best way to prevent people from stealing the idea?

You will have to patent your idea in order to protect it and your IP. Remember you can patent a concept without actually having a working example. Contact a patent lawyer and get a search done of existing and/or related patents. He will then be able to advise you whether you patent application will be likely to be successful.
