Cannot connect to web with IE but can with Mozilla Firebird

Dont know how this happened, one min IE was working fine the next nothing. I dl'ed and installed Firebird and its working fine.
Ive tried everything I can think of and looked at everything I could find on Google relating to the old 'The page cannot be displayed' message.
But nothing works. I even downgraded from 6 to 5 and still no joy.
Ive tried everything from cookie corruption, checking the host file to virus and spyware possibilities. The client PC is on a network and connects through a router.
And ideas?

Help web experts 
I'd prefer to keep Mozilla but our users are supposed to use Internet Explorer only so I really need to get it working. As you know a simple reinstall is out of the question.
