Thinking of modding the xbox, but i've heard that you can go on xbox live with a modded unit.

Is this correct? are there anyways round it?

Hello Sam,

Yes, most new X-Box chips (such as Xecutor 2.3/2.3) have external switches on them so that you can switch them off completely rendering them undetectable to X-Box Live If you forget to switch it off in a Stella induced state you will get banned though.

Oh, and don't forget there are alternatives to Live for online gaming, such as XBConnect and boX-Link.

Update on the modchips, mine arrived two days after ordering even though they were supposed to be backlogged. So I can thoroughly recommend BaldBouncer.

Just waiting to get home from Holland to fit the thing now ...

IIRC you have to make sure your hard disk is "locked" when using Xbox Live aswell as switching the chip off. If you are using a different hard disk it will most probably be unlocked, and you have to lock it first.

Yup, best to lock it and be on the safe side. You can use ConfigMagic to do this easily Or do it via the Slayer boot CD

Yep, usual places. Conficmagic on its own will be smaller and easier to download (Slayer v2.5 is the latest)
