A question for all the sound and vision buffs.

Im going to buy a 28" widescreen TV with s-video.
I have seen a very wide range of prices, I would ideally like a Sony with virtual dolby surround and 100hz refresh rate.

Is the 100hz refresh worth the extra cash?
Is virual dolby surround any good?

Any cheap places you know of to buy them (internet/shops?)

Thanks

Scott

Try www.qed-uk.com

They are part of Miller Bros. or were when I bought a TV a couple of years ago.

I have never come across a virtual surround system that sounds anywhere near a wired system and I used to sell TVs 'n' stuff.

I have just got a 32" 100hz and the picture quality is superb...

Only thing I have noticed is when flicking through the Sky channels the blue information text at the bottom of the screen is slightly fuzzy !!!! not sure why...!

Tis great though being able to run Gamecube games at 60hz...

You don't necessarily need a 100Hz TV to run 60Hz games. I've got a traditional 50Hz Philips that will do NTSC and PAL 60Hz no problem.

Try and take along some of your own equipment of DVD's to view with, not always easy but far better than trying to make a judgement based on a fuzzy version of Ch5

Also check AVforums.com

100Hz picture quality is far better, well worth it IMHO.

Mogsi, try plugging the sky box into AV1. I had the same problem and this cured it.

Ditto Dave A - 100Hz is good, although you probably won't notice much of a difference at first, but you try looking at a 50Hz screen again afterwards (esp Sky tv guide) OW!! my eyes hurt!!

Surround sound on TV's isn't great - you're better off investing in a dedicated home cinema amp and some speakers - which you can get when funds allow.

If you're going for Sony 100Hz set, get one with DRC - it's brilliant - quadruples the resolution of the picture.

Mogsi - yes! put the sky into AV1, but also make sure your picture settings are set to output RGB rather than PAL.

Only problem is most tv's only have 1 RGB enabled SCART (usually AV1) so your DVD picture will be compromised slightly, but you'll more than likely use sky more than the dvd...

100Hz is worthwhile, any sorta virtual "trusurround" isn't.

YOu will find that on some scrolling text, particularly horizontal titles, you can get a bit of fuzziness as the TV tries to upsample from a 25Hz full frame picture (50 fields/sec) to 100Hz. Live with it
