On the back of the drive you should find 3 pairs of pins. They are usually marked MA(Master) SL(Slave) CS(Cable Select)
If you have added this drive on a cable that already has a hard drive (or CD/DVD etc), set the original one to MA and the new one to SL.
If it is the only device on a cable, I think I'm right in saying you should set it as MA.

fig i've always set up any lone device on an IDE as a master, although i'd imagine it would make much difference if it was the only device, 2 devices which is the maximum for IDE slot need to be set as one primary one slave, not got a clue what cable select is though until i open my xbox i though it meant the device which was first inline was treated as master

Duh, what was I thinking? Brain said MA, fingers typed SL
Single device is set as a Master.
As for Cable Select. The drive is configured at the factory for a cable select setting. This allows the drive to assume the proper role of master or slave based on the connector used on the cable. For the cable select setting to work properly, the cables you are using must support the cable select feature. Current UltraATA cables with the 3 colored connectors do support this feature.
