Is it a mail you sent and how many recipients (sic). ?

I thought the read reciept request went with the message, When outlook (or whicheve mail reader) at the reciepent end sees the header it goes I should send acknowledgement back. So I assume that the only way to stop the reciepts would be to get the recipents to delete the mails. You can set Outlook to not requested the reciept but that would only occur for mails sent after that time.

Make sense ?
