Just got my first EMI copy protected CD.

I always purchase genuine cd's but I copy them to my hard drive and use my laptop as a personal cd when I'm out and about.

Not only can I not copy the disc to the hard drive the cd plays in a little crap music player and not windows media player that has my personal sound settings saved in.

Are any hacks available on the net to get round this problem?

Before anyone starts I do not wish to copy the CD, I have this problem because I only buy genuine CD's.

That sucks big time, i've got 3166 songs (19 gig of hard drive space) all from original albums that i own, which are now safely stored away simply because i am sick and tired of petty theft (cars getting broke into, burglary etc) and losing the originals, sometimes while still having the case (i use a cd visor holder in car)

Think were all going to be banged up soon

I believe that something as simple as holding shift whilst you insert the CD stops the protection software.

Not quite

If you have a CD or DVD writer these tend to ignore the protection completly and hence will allow you to rip them quite happily....done it on all the EMI protected CDs I have including The Darkness and a few others

ian,

No joy with the shift key thing. It stops the little player loading up but Windows Media player still won't copy or even play the CD.

give cdex a try, its freeware u can get it from download.com

iof failing that, pop the cd in a normal cd player or personal cd player, get a stereo to stereo cable link from line out/headphone jack to the line in on your sound card and record it to your hdd, simple

ok fair enough they are doing it as they are loosing millions due to illegal copying but when the final product costs £1-£5 and at £14.99 who are the real criminals......

you need to read a paper on how the technology works. There is essentially 2 copies on the album on there. One is for cdroms and one is for stereo's.

Sony will be releasing plugins for the cdrom versions to support all the major players like mplayer, winamp etc....

However, this will not last long. I already have a few ideas on how to beat it, and I know a few of the lads in my local Linux group say they have beaten it and are currently coding a linux program to automate it.

no matter what tho there is always a way of doing it. the only way to stop it would be to destroy all cd and tape technology and go back to vinyls as there a lot harder to copy in the home

You could try a program called Alcohol 120% ... or CDRSoft.
You could even try Daemon Tools ....
