Exporting from Access

When I export a table from Access to Excel the blank fields seem to contain some sort of information as when I use the formula =COUNTA(Z1:Z5) even empty fields are counted.
The only way I have found to get around this is to manually delete empty fields, But with the size of the table it will take ages.
Any ideas ?
