Anyone got experience of this???
Our company is based in Tamworth, Staffs, but unfortunately we can't get ADSL or cable (and only 64K ISDN) due to various combinations of fingers and getting and outs from the various telecoms companies
However, it appears that (as we are in sight of the Sutton Coldfield transmitter mast) we can get wDSL - Wireless DSL!
We are talking about a couple of hundred notes per month for 5-1 contended, 2Mb up and down, DSL Internet access - whereas the only other alternative (apart from expensive leased lines) is even more expensive (and latentesque) satellite.
Anyone used wDSL??? Whaddya think??

Hello
I campaigned for Broadband in my town, and attracted a wireless provider (I also managed to get enough people to register to upgrade the exchange for ADSL as well).
Apart from some teething problems, the wireless network works pretty well. You get some degredation problems in the rain. Not a complete loss of service just longer ping times.
I don't know why yours is so expensive? These guys are offering £19.99 for 512/512 50:1 contention.
Steve.

Steve,
co-incidentally i found out about the Sutton Coldfield TV transmitter based wDSL from someone else who also was trying to get an "out in the sticks community" network going - see http://www.dpraught.tele2.co.uk/index.htm for some background.
I followed various links from that site and ended up with a wDSL provider (actually based in Leeds) called GX Networks.
The reason why it is so expensive is that it is contended at FIVE to one, not FIFTY, and is 2Mb bandwidth each way versus 512Kb, plus it is for business use - which always costs more (although you do get the VAT back ).
Cheers,
mb

You could also look at satellite DSL. There are several companies in the UK offering the service. Very good speeds and the cost is not bad either. I'll try and dig out the names of a supplier for you.

Do you not find that the latency of Satellite broadband hampers you? Thinking of VNC, SSH etc.
Would be interested to hear how it performs in the real world.
