strange IE problem,

got IE6 with service pack..

problem is: all java stuff has stopped working altogether, open new window in IE spawns a new window which then self minimises and close, and holding the shift key and clicking on a link spawns, but then self minimses and closes, but if i HOLD DOWN the shift key it sometimes works.... bloody weird..
virus scanner comes up blank
any ideas?
